April 2004
New Orleans, LA

Three Pierre physicians were recently  honored in New Orleans, LA at the American College of Physicians national meeting. Dr. Robert L. Allison (elected in 2002) and Dr. Philip F. Meyer (elected in 2003) obtained fellowship status and were hooded at the general convention. Dr. Phillip E. Hoffsten was awarded the 2002 South Dakota Chapter Laureate Award.

Internal Medicine is a medical specialty focusing on the health of adults. Internists focus at least three of their seven years of medical school training on learning how to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases primarily affecting adults. Internists serve as medical consultants and are often thought of as “the doctor’s doctor.”

Fellowship status is awarded to a select few physicians who have obtained certification in the American Board of Internal Medicine and who have been recognized by their peers for excellence and skill in medical practice, teaching, or research. Fellows are also recognized for their commitment to the latest advances in Internal Medicine, their commitment to professional activities, and for patient care. The letters FACP (Fellow of the American College of Physicians) behind a physicians name certify these high standards.

Dr Phillip E. Hoffsten, FACP was honored by receiving the South Dakota Chapter Laureate Award.  Awardees generally have been Fellows for at least 15 to 20 years, with a long history of excellence and peer approval in the specialty of internal medicine. Additionally, they have served the American College of Physicians with distinction.
